Triumeq combines abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children. Abacavir and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that block viral DNA formation, while dolutegravir is an integrase inhibitor that prevents the virus from integrating into human DNA. Together, they help control viral replication and maintain immune function.
Triumeq is taken orally, usually once daily with or without food. Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or chew. Dosage may vary based on age, weight, kidney function, and previous HIV treatment. Regular monitoring of viral load, liver, and kidney function is recommended.
Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, a history of lactic acidosis, heart disease, or if you carry the HLA-B*5701 gene, which increases the risk of abacavir hypersensitivity. Do not stop therapy abruptly, as it may cause viral rebound.
Do not use Triumeq if allergic to abacavir, dolutegravir, lamivudine, or any component of the tablet. It is contraindicated in patients with prior abacavir hypersensitivity.
Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and insomnia. Serious side effects may include severe hypersensitivity reactions, liver toxicity, lactic acidosis, or immune reconstitution syndrome. Seek medical attention if severe symptoms occur.
Triumeq may interact with certain anticonvulsants, rifampin, metformin, and other medications affecting liver enzymes or kidney function. Inform your doctor of all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at once.
Overdose may cause severe nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.
Store Triumeq at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep tablets in the original container and out of reach of children.
